Empowering Women through Health and Wellbeing - 6 week exercise programme
We hosted a six-week exercise program specifically tailored to the needs of the women in our community. This initiative aimed not only to encourage physical fitness but also to enhance mental well-being, foster a sense of community, and empower women to take charge of their health.
The women pictured here participated in these weekly classes, which featured a variety of fitness techniques including strength training, cardio, and flexibility exercises. Throughout the course of the program, we witnessed incredible transformations, both physically and mentally.

The African well Woman Cookbook
The African Well Woman Cookbook is an innovative project that encourages nutritious and culturally relevant meals that celebrate African heritage while supporting healthy living.
This cookbook offers diverse African-inspired recipes that provide nutritious, flavourful, and easy-to-follow meal options for women and their families. It was co-written by a team of dedicated health professionals, nutritionists, and community leaders who understand the unique health challenges that Black African women may face.
Impact of the Cookbook:
-
Promoting Healthy Lifestyles: The recipes are designed to inspire Black African women and their families to make healthier food choices without compromising the rich flavours and cultural significance of traditional African cuisine.
-
Addressing Health Disparities: African and Afro-Caribbean communities are often disproportionately affected by health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. This cookbook provides practical, healthy alternatives to traditional dishes, helping to reduce the risk of these conditions while preserving cultural ties.
-
Empowering Women: By equipping women with the knowledge and skills to prepare nutritious meals for themselves and their families, we empower them to take control of their health and influence the well-being of future generations.
-
Cultural Connection: The cookbook emphasizes the importance of cultural identity through food, ensuring that women can connect to their roots while adapting to a healthier lifestyle.
-
Inspiring the Community: Through this initiative, we aim to encourage a community of Black African women to prioritize their health and become wellness ambassadors within their households and social circles.
With the support of funding from the NHS Charities Together and Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity, we are proud to make this valuable resource available through Amazon and Waterstones.

The African Well Woman Cookbook is more than just a collection of recipes – it is a movement towards healthier, happier lives for black African women and their families. By promoting the traditional way of eating with a healthy twist, we encourage lasting, sustainable change in our community.

The Annual African Well Woman Conference 2023 – Empowering Women, Building Communities
The African Well Woman Conference is an initiative to address the unique health and well-being challenges Black African women face. In March 2023, we proudly hosted our inaugural conference, which brought together 100 Black African women from diverse backgrounds, all committed to enhancing their health, well-being, and leadership in their communities.
This annual event, organised by the African Well Woman Project, is designed to provide a platform for education, inspiration, and community building. The conference is led by expert speakers and professionals in various health fields, all of whom share a common goal: empowering Black African women with the knowledge, tools, and support they need to thrive.
Key Highlights of the Conference:
Expert-Led Discussions: Our host, Beaulah Chizimba, and a panel of health and wellbeing experts facilitated conversations covering various topics, including mental health, nutrition, fertility, menopause, and child safeguarding. These discussions provided actionable insights tailored to the unique needs of African women.
Community Connections: Women from all walks of life connected, shared experiences, and built a support network that extends beyond the conference, fostering a sense of unity and collective empowerment.
Cultural Awareness and Health: The conference highlighted how traditional African practices can be integrated into modern health strategies, offering a holistic approach to physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Impact on the Community: Health and Wellbeing Advocacy: The conference has empowered women to prioritize their health and take control of their well-being. Armed with expert knowledge, attendees have shared this information with their families and broader communities, creating ripple effects of positive change.
Support for Black African Women: This yearly event is crucial in providing a culturally specific space where Black African women can openly discuss health issues often overlooked or misunderstood in broader healthcare systems.
Strengthening Families: The knowledge and tools gained at the conference are helping women improve their own lives and also the lives of their families by adopting healthier practices and creating lasting changes within their households.
Long-Term Community Impact: As the African Well Woman Conference grows each year, it aims to address even more pressing health topics, expanding its reach to impact more women, their families, and entire communities.
This annual event is more than just a conference—it is a movement aimed at reshaping the future for Black African women and their families by ensuring equitable access to health information and support.

We are excited to continue this journey, making the African Well Woman Conference a pivotal part of our mission to uplift and empower our community. Join us each year for a life-changing experience encouraging health, growth, and unity.

Stress Management Workshop – Empowering Black African Women to Thrive
We understand that managing stress is an essential component of living a healthy and balanced life, especially for Black African women who often face unique cultural, social, and health challenges.
To address these challenges, we hosted a full-day Stress Management Workshop in partnership with the Health & Care Leadership Academy, designed to equip women in our community with practical tools for managing stress effectively.

This workshop, led by Beaulah Chizimba, Principal Executive Leadership Coach, offered a safe and supportive environment where participants could learn to recognise stress, understand its impact on both mental and physical health, and implement effective strategies for managing it.

Key Highlights of the Workshop:
Holistic Stress Management Techniques: The workshop covered various methods such as mindfulness, breathing exercises, time management, and strategies to build resilience, specifically tailored to the challenges faced by Black African women.
Interactive and Practical Sessions: Attendees engaged in hands-on activities and exercises demonstrating how to apply stress-relief techniques in real-life scenarios, making integrating these practices into daily life easier.
Community and Peer Support: The event allowed Black African women to connect with others facing similar challenges, creating a supportive network where experiences were shared and encouragement was offered.
Impact on the Community:
Improved Mental and Emotional Wellbeing: Many participants reported feeling empowered to take control of their mental and emotional well-being. They left the workshop with newfound confidence in their ability to manage work, family, and personal demands.
Empowering Families: The techniques and strategies learned during the workshop will benefit the women who attended and positively influence their families. By managing their stress, these women are better equipped to provide emotional support to their loved ones and create a more peaceful, healthy environment at home.
Long-Term Community Resilience: As more women gain access to these tools, we expect to see a ripple effect of healthier individuals, stronger families, and, ultimately, a more resilient and thriving community of Black African women.
Continued Learning and Support: The workshop is part of our ongoing commitment to providing culturally relevant support for Black African women. We are excited to offer future workshops and resources to build on this event's success.
This Stress Management Workshop is just one example of how we are working to address our community's holistic health and well-being needs.
We proudly offer a space where Black African women can prioritise their mental health, find support, and gain the tools they need to lead fulfilling, balanced lives.

For those who couldn't attend, we look forward to seeing you at our next workshop! Together, we are building a healthier, more empowered community.
